Alien

By Josue Reyes

Sixteen years,

Four months,

And four days ago,

An alien crash landed on Earth.

Its whole life it’s been trying to figure out how to live.

Everything is unfamiliar to it,

Even what it itself is.

It never knows how to act,

Everything about life on earth confuses it.

Anytime someone tries to talk to it,

It loses it train of thought,

As if its brain is short circuiting.

For its whole life

It has felt isolated from everything around it—

Like a star from the very home it came from,

Light-years away from anything around it.

Anytime anyone tries to interact with it,

It feels cold,

Freezing cold,

As if it lacks the warmth from the heart.

Nobody has ever truly known it.

Everybody has a hard time understanding it,

Even itself.

It’s as if it itself is an incomplete puzzle,

Which it has been dedicating its whole life to solving,

All of which to no avail.

Every piece that it places

Is another two or three pieces that begins to second guess.

All it yearns for,

Is to be back home with the rest of its kind,

On its own planet with people who understand it.

A simple observer to life on earth,

Rather than an active participant of it.

It still waits for the day that it can return home,

High in the stars,

With the rest of its own kind.

Then maybe,

And just maybe,

It could finally be understood by the people around it.

Synopsis:  I decided on a theme of social alienation for this poem while listening to the Radiohead song “Subterranean Homesick Alien”. For my whole life, I haven’t felt that I belonged anywhere, and I’ve only made a handful of close friends. This poem is definitely more emotional and vulnerable from my last one, and I’m sure a lot of people could relate to this of alienation, or the feeling of not belonging anywhere.
